One of our dreams have come true!!
We were approached by Darryl Gibbs, father of Cynthia Gibbs who was shaken to death by her day care provider in 2000. She was 8 months old. Darryl is going to Congress with a new bill as follows:
The "Declaration of Purpose" for "The SBS Prevention Act"
In order to protect infants and young children in the United States from Shaken Baby Syndrome, and in response to the need for enhanced Federal efforts focused on increasing public awareness and education, about the risks and dangers associated with Shaken Baby Syndrome, as shown by the child victims listed below, Congress in this Act establishes a comprehensive initiative to prevent this form of child abuse.
Miranda Joy and her story will be part of this and we will be backing Darryl in his endeavors to get this bill passed. Please continue to follow the progress of this bill and any one who would like help with this can be in touch with Darryl at:
GibbsFoundation@aol.com or read his story at this link.
The Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act
You can read more about Darryl and what he has done in New York by visiting the links page(above) and clicking on New Law in New York State. He is also working very closely with the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome.
Little by little we will help to make the world a better and safer place for babies!!
Conference on Shaken Baby Syndrome in Park City September 14th, 2006 @ 3:40pm
Ed Yeates Reporting
Congress is about to drive home the message of Shaken Baby Syndrome like never before. The father behind that national legislation - along with a researcher whose launched some of the most dramatic studies ever on SBS - are in Utah right now.
It's one of the largest gatherings of its kind. Park City is hosting the North American Conference on Shaken Baby Syndrome. This time around, more than 450 people are throwing their support behind research and legislation.
It's one thing to demonstrate shaken baby syndrome with a doll and then to see the new highly realistic model developed by a Japanese Company. It is being used by Dr. Carole Jenny at Brown Medical School.Carole Jenny, M.D., Brown Medical School: "As the baby's head swings back and forth, the strain on the tissue - the amount of deformation on the tissue - starts to accumulate."
The shaking, in slow motion, actually follows a timeline of only five seconds or so. As the head shakes back and forth, stress and damage inside the brain goes deeper and deeper.
Carole Jenny, M.D.: "The strains get deeper and deeper into the brain tissue and accumulates to higher and higher levels until you have tissue failure - until you actually end up with brain damage."
Professionals, victims and family, they were all there to see this latest research, but something else, too. This conference is more than just teaching people about what happens; it's spearheading a national educational campaign that's taking this message directly into communities, plus toughening laws against the perpetrators of shaken baby syndrome. Darryl Gibbs is the father of eight-month-old Cynthia Gibbs who died six years ago in New York at the hands of a licensed child care provider.
Darryl Gibbs: "A woman that we knew. A woman who had no criminal history. A woman that we trusted."
Gibbs is pushing for tougher penalty laws and he's now awaiting word from Congress on a new educational bill.
Darryl: Gibbs: "A massive campaign about shaken baby syndrome through television, radio print -- the works."
That fully funded campaign would expose almost every parent in every community to not only the dangers of SBS, but ways to divert anger - in a healthy way - away from the infant.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
MIRANDA JOY
(May 30, 2004)
In this new month we want you to remember the celebration of her birthday but also to start working harder to stop SBS and Domestic Violence.
Instead of planning a birthday party for a little red-headed, blue eyed sweetheart named Miranda Joy I updated her website. Life is not always fair and for Miranda Joy it was way too short. She did not have the opportunity to eat birthday cake, open presents and giggle over the floating balloons. She will never go to school, never have a boyfriend, never get married, never have children or grandchildren.
Her life was cut short because her father did not have the courage it took to be patient, ask for help or walk away. He choose instead to shake her tiny body to make her be quiet. In doing this he took her away from us.
Although it has left a sadness which none of us will ever get over it has given us the challenge to keep this from happening to another baby. That is what this foundation is all about. We want to educate everyone that it is never okay to shake a baby. With God's help we will succeed. You can help us by becoming a new member, telling everyone about the foundation, volunteering to help, and remembering Miranda Joy and what happened to her. The best birthday present in the world would be saving a baby and that is what we hope to do.
If you would like to give Miranda Joy a birthday gift click on the donate button at the top of this page and give her $1 which will go into a special fund we have started to help other families that have been affected by SBS or Domestic Violence.
(You will also become one of our MIRANDA JOY JEWELS)
And one other thing to do is always remember:
BEFORE YOU SHAKE-TAKE A BREAK
Help us by becoming a member, volunteering
and spreading the word about the
