IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT SBS

It's estimated that 50,000 children are the victims of shaken baby syndrome every year. And health experts remind us that every year thousands of children are needlessly injured and killed. Many of those who do survive may suffer life long damage.
Newborn babies are very fragile, that's why experts say they're very sensitive to excess shaking. "Their brains are developing, they have more space in the cranial cavity. And the brain just knocks around. It's like an egg and how the egg cracks and becomes mushed up. And that happens to the poor baby's brains.

Experts say it's essential for parents to stay calm, even if their child is upsetting them. "Often what happens is, stress escalated to a point where a parent or care-giver just gets out of control. And if there's stuff in the room they might throw it. If the baby is crying endlessly and they've had little or no sleep, they just may loose it.

Child experts say, if you feel like you're losing your cool and a child is around, you should leave the room and calm down before handling the child again.

"Based on ones background a parent may not have the pattern set to know how to appropriately deal with children and newborns especially.

"If you can't remember anything else, it's never, never shake a baby.

Experts say it's important to remember that crying is really the only method children have to communicate with their parents. So they encourage people to remain calm. Babies under 6 months of age have the highest risk, but all children up to 3 years old are vulnerable.
